‘75 Tampa Bay Rowdies

Biography

The 1975 Tampa Bay Rowdies made history in their inaugural outdoor season, finishing 16 wins and 6 losses before capturing the North American Soccer League championship. Led by head coach Eddie Firmani and general manager Beau Rogers, the Rowdies built a balanced team around Derek Smethurst’s scoring, Paul Hammond’s goalkeeping, and a tough defense anchored by players like Stewart Jump, Farrukh Quraishi, Mike Connell, Malcolm Linton, and Alex Pringle. After playoff wins over Toronto Metros Croatia and the Miami Toros, Tampa Bay defeated the Portland Timbers 2 to 0 in Soccer Bowl 1975, with goals from Arsene Auguste and Clyde Best. The championship gave Tampa Bay one of its first great professional sports moments and helped establish the Rowdies as a lasting symbol of the region’s soccer history.
