Dick Crippen

Biography
As an award-winning television sports anchor, Crippen’s name remains synonymous with the Tampa Bay area sports scene — and especially the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Crippen was the Rowdies’ public-address announcer for games at Tampa Stadium, often serving as head cheerleader, opposing-team agitator, entertainer and educator for fans new to the sport. His act was tireless — and so was he. After each game, Crippen dashed back to his television studio and delivered the nightly sports report for the 11 o’clock news.
Crippen, who also worked on the radio crew for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and closed his sports career as a senior advisor for the Tampa Bay Rays, delighted in the Rowdies’ early success, knowing it was a key element in the area’s sports growth.
With a half-century of broadcasting experience in the Tampa Bay market, Crippen was recognized multiple times as the Florida Sports Broadcaster of the Year, while also being known for community service and charity work.
You wouldn’t forget Crippen’s enthusiastic voice, particularly if you were a “Fannie’’ watching the exploits of the colorful and wildly successful Rowdies teams. Crippen provided the soundtrack for those memorable seasons. “What do you think of your Rowdies now?’’ Crippen often said to the cheering throng after a goal.
How do you summarize such distinguished contributions, particularly when it came to helping fans learn and enjoy a new sport that quickly became a passion?
If a movie was made about Crippen’s career, what would be the title? He didn’t hesitate.
“It’s a Wonderful Life,’’ Crippen said.
